Rosie Schinners is a mixed media artist who resides on Salt Spring Island, British Columbia, Canada. Originally from Barrie, Ontario, she holds a Bachelor of Art from the University of Guelph as well as a Bachelor of Fine Art from NSCAD University. With painting as the primary focus during her formal art education, she has retained a painterly sensibility in her approach to paper and collage art as a primary medium. In 2019, she was selected and collaborated with Kolaj Magazine as the World Collage Day Featured Artist.
Working with vintage print material and handcrafted decorative papers, Schinners combines hand-cut and torn collage with vibrant splashes of colour to bring new life to old images. Her art practice is varied, ranging from collage on paper, paper-based jewelry, sculptural collage, and street art. She looks to explore and express fleeting moments of magic, alchemy, memory, and nostalgia. Recent work has celebrated and reflected the traditions of folk magic and our relationship to the natural world, all through the lens of the feminine experience. Magical realism is at the forefront of her work, as well as the vibrancy of saturated colour to evoke joy and hope.
